Ivey’s Scope of Work:
This project consisted of the first phase of Facility Upgrades to the KSC Visitors Complex. Ivey’s Construction, Inc. was awarded this construction contract through a negotiated contract. Initial upgrades began in March of 1998 with the addition of a new mechanical system consisting of two new 200-ton chillers and associated chilled water piping and a new electrical and communication system with associated duct bank distribution.

Upon completion of the Chiller / Electrical Modifications, Ivey’s Construction was awarded Building M6-409 as the next construction project. This project entailed major building demolition and renovations, including roof replacement, at the park’s main entrance. Features of this project included a new Information Center with associated administrative offices, a new “Universe Theatre” with a 300 person seating capacity and numerous facility modifications to support new exhibit areas. All work associated with the park’s main entrance was accomplished with no down time to the daily operations of the Visitors Complex, a task that involved detailed coordination and scheduling.

As a result of Ivey’s adherence to the aggressive schedules and maintaining project budgets, additional projects were awarded during this first phase of facility upgrades. Using “fast track” construction methods, Ivey’s was awarded and constructed the new entrance Ticketing Plaza. Major features of this project include over a five hundred-yard foundation, over two hundred tons of exposed structural steel mocked-up as the International Space Station, new ticketing booths and over one acre of concrete pavers. The final step in completion of this project was the new NASA Protocol administration offices. Systems furniture combined with standard offices serves as the administrative support area for VIP’s visiting Kennedy Space Center.
